Sunrise
(November 8, 1988)
Fire,
gentle fire:
dawn kindling day.
Pink sunshafts in ranks
escape through the widening gap
between the silhouette of mornward hills
and the rolling rills of graysmoke clouds
drawing back as the day rises from obscurity.
Nightward I look, where the river foots
an arc of pink through moist—
there! it multiplies to rainbow,
the sun winning ascendancy:
this day's birth,
last night's
destiny.
