Painted Trees

(Companion to "Spring's Colors")

As
if children
had been painting
views of colorfull autumn:
daubings red, yellow (I remember),
splotches of color, splotches of leaves;
and "Class is over" she had said,
so they took their painted brushes to wash
in the sink in the corner of the room;
but, being only children, had washed them not quite clean.
As if, then, they stood them in brownwood stands,
in rows, their bristles held high to dry—
that stand of trees there, coming alive,
marching to sky, branches held high,
buddings red, yellow (autumn scene?),
lift aloft unwearying arms,
begging spring's rains
wash... wash...
green.
