Carlee Marie III
(Homecoming Queen)
[October 4, 1996]
Soon
the hillsides
will flame out
from maples and sumacs,
and oaks will crisp golden
as night descends earlier and earlier,
and sky- gray -across heavy clouds send chill raindrops
to sparkle briefly in short days' fitful sunshine,
before cold winds tear the color from the branches,
snuffing out the wonder, shuffling in the barren of winter.
Tonight, though, a tiara sparkles in the flood lights
(sitting where it must have been fashioned for),
crowning a double fall of golden hair
cascading onto a gorgeous red suit,
andoh... beauty's focal point:
a smile daring even
to rival sun,
moon and
stars.
