On a Bumblebee

(August 24, 1990)

No.
August is
the cruellest month:
see, a bumblebee sits
on the dwarf snapdragon, many-flowered—
purple petals, most, with white chins,
huddling, hugging ground-close, spilling over sidewalk—
sits perfectly poised, grasping flower, ready to work;
sits perfectly still, all evening still; sits perfectly dead.
Lustreless black, dirty yellow, lifeless legs, still wings:
it carries now no careless menace about,
yet bears still strength in death
to cling to the living—
oh silent harbinger (yes)
of autumn's coming,
summer to
tread.
